S30117 Decarbonising concrete by validating the use of lower carbon cement blends for incorporation in the standards - Phase 2

National Highways Limited awarded Ove Arup £339,914.45 to conduct Phase 2 research validating the use of lower-carbon binary and ternary blended cements with higher proportions of supplementary cementitious materials such as calcined clays and limestone. The project involves a staged laboratory experimental programme to explore cement blend combinations and replacement levels exceeding those currently permitted under UK standards, with findings intended to inform updates to BS 8500:2023, MCHW, and DMRB. This work builds on Phase 1 deliverables and aims to support adoption of sustainable cement alternatives while maintaining concrete infrastructure durability and performance.
