Targeted survey of rare aquatic plants of marl lakes and turloughs in Co. Clare and south-east Galway

The Department of Housing Local Government and Heritage awarded a contract valued at €11,150 on 12 May 2026 for a specialist survey of rare aquatic plants in marl lakes and turloughs in the Burren area of Co. Clare and south-east Galway. The survey aims to improve recording of aquatic plants in these habitats and target specific rare species, particularly Nitella tenuissima, by revisiting known sites and exploring smaller lakes and pools with no previous aquatic plant records. The work also includes potential surveying of karst streams and rivers in the study area to further elucidate the ecological requirements of these species.
