Lit Review: Cyanobacterial toxins in fish arising from cyanobacterial bloom

The Food Standards Agency awarded this literature review contract to Toxicology and Risk Assessment Consulting Ltd (TARA) for 139,985 GBP on 28 April 2026. The review examines the occurrence and toxicity of cyanobacterial toxins (microcystins, anatoxins, cylindrospermopsins, saxitoxins, and anabaenopeptins) in fish and other foods resulting from blooms in Lough Neagh, considering bioaccumulation, seasonal patterns, and effects on various animal species to inform FSA risk assessments and regulatory decisions. The work supports the FSA's chemical hazards research programme and addresses data gaps on cyanotoxin levels, distribution, and potential contamination pathways in response to recurring algal blooms in Northern Ireland.
