Provision of Scanning Surveillance Activities for APHA, including PME's

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) has awarded a contract worth £2.4 million for the provision of scanning surveillance activities, including post-mortem examinations (PMEs), to support animal health and food safety monitoring across England and Wales. The contract, awarded on 22 January 2026, was won by a consortium of 12 organizations including Aberystwyth Animal Health Laboratory Ltd, SRUC, The Royal Veterinary College, and several universities (Cambridge, Bristol, Liverpool, Nottingham, Surrey). The scanning surveillance service will supplement APHA's existing Veterinary Investigation Centres by identifying food safety risks, ensuring disease reporting compliance, monitoring animal welfare, and tracking patterns in endemic diseases.
