The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has awarded a contract worth £4.5 million to Eckert and Ziegler for services to collect, transport, store and process existing High Activity Sealed Radioactive Sources (Caesium-137 irradiator units) from UK end-users and return them to the Sellafield waste management facility. The first phase of this Home Office-led disposal programme involves the supplier dismantling up to 6 irradiator units containing 12 sources, storing them for up to 36 months, and packaging the sources for transport back to Sellafield via a Type B(M) transport package, with an option to add 3 further units.
