Rentgenski praškovni difraktometer je namenjen za analizo kristaliničnih materialov, ki so lahko anorganski, organski ali kovinski. S to analizno metodo identificiramo katere (kvalitativna analiza), in koliko je posamezne kristalne faze v vzorcu (kvantitativna analiza). Poleg tega lahko določamo velikost nano delcev, notranje napetosti v kristalni strukturi, ter še vrste drugih karakteristik, kot na primer pojav trdne topnosti v fazah, določanje sestave faz na podlagi premika uklonov in druge.
