The Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Rhein has awarded a contract to Martens en Van Oord Aannemingsbedrijf B.V. for 5.65 million EUR for gravel replenishment works on the Lower Rhine (Rhine-km 743 to 847) to combat ongoing riverbed erosion. The project involves delivery and precise placement of natural stone aggregates in three size fractions (145,000 tonnes total) using self-propelled hopper barges across seven designated river sections, with verification by bathymetric surveys, to be completed over calendar years 2026 and 2027.
