Overview

Structural discrimination against women in Peru generates inequality, restricts the exercise of fundamental rights and hampers development opportunities. These challenges are sustained by entrenched socio-cultural patterns and gender roles, ultimately undermining the physical, political, and economic autonomy of women in an environment marked by high social tolerance for gender-based violence. Against this backdrop, the project ForSNEJ II, financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ in partnership with the Peruvian Judiciary (Poder Judicial) as its political counterpart, aims to strengthen the institutional and professional capacities of key stakeholders to promote gender equality in Peru, with a particular focus on advancing women"s physical and economic autonomy. In the area of physical autonomy, the project supports the consolidation of the National Specialized Justice System (SNEJ) and contributes to the prevention of violence against women by helping to reduce its incidence. In terms of economic autonomy, the projects seeks to expand women"s access to economic opportunities through enhance coordination and articulation of relevant institutions, thereby reducing their vulnerability to gender-based violence. ForSNEJ II advises the Judiciary (Poder Judicial) as political counterpart, the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP), as well as civil society and the private sector, as implementing partners, on the following results: a) Improved governance of the National Specialized Justice System (SNEJ) at both national and subnational levels. b) Enhanced professional capacities among private sector and civil society actors for the implementation of sensitization activities using gender-transformative approaches. c) The technical and institutional conditions for the governance and implementation of the National Strategy "Mujer Emprendedora" have been strengthened within participating institutions, particularly within the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP)
