Die Ruhrbahn GmbH und die Stadt Essen, Amt für Straßenbau und Verkehrstechnik planen, mit
finanzieller Unterstützung des Bundes und Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, den Neubau der
Gleisanlagen auf dem Streckenabschnitt der Bahnhofstangente in Essen, Steeler Straße,
Herkules- und Goldschmidtstraße.
Die Bahnhofstangente ist Teil einer geplanten, rd. 5,4 km langen oberirdischen Aus bzw.
Neubaustrecke, die neben der Beseitigung des Kapazitätsengpasses im Tunnel auch der
Erschließung der Entwicklungsfläche Essen 51 dienen soll.
