The Canfranc Underground Laboratory Consortium has awarded KURARAY EUROPE GmbH a contract worth €624,890 for the supply of 7,900 sheets of ultra-high ultraviolet-transparent polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA UVT) for anti-implosion covers protecting 20-inch photomultiplier tubes in the Hyper-Kamiokande neutrino detector experiment. The sheets, each 13 mm thick, must maintain high transparency to ultraviolet light to preserve Cherenkov photon detection sensitivity while providing mechanical resistance to withstand the water pressure at 70 meters depth where the detector operates.
